On December 16, 2004, the town of Wunstorf and the Verkehrsverein Steinhuder Meer founded Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH (SMT). On February 8, 2007, the town of Hagenburg joined as a shareholder of Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH. On May 1, 2008, the northern shore of the Steinhuder Meer joined the company with the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge and the Mardorf Tourist Office. When Rehburg-Loccum joined in April 2010, all neighboring municipalities became shareholders in SMT. Since March 2020, the shareholders of SMT have been the town of Wunstorf, the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge, the town of Rehburg-Loccum and the entire joint municipality of Sachsenhagen (including Hagenburg). The Steinhude and Mardorf transport associations have since ceased to be shareholders.
