In 1207, the monastery was founded as a Cistercian nunnery. The monastery produced many agricultural products that were sold in Hanover. After the Reformation, the monastery continued to be run as a Protestant convent. A major fire destroyed the monastery except for the church. It was rebuilt by King George II. The present appearance was shaped by the pupil of the well-known master builder Conrad Wilhelm Hase.
